1. Call Georgia Power’s Customer Service Center and ask to be removed from the “Smart Usage” rate plan and enrolled on the Traditional Rate Plan. Tell them you didn’t know that the “Smart Usage” rate plan had a hidden demand charge. If you are told “No”, you must remain on the Smart Usage plan, ask to speak to a supervisor and repeat the request. If the supervisor refuses to let you change rate plans, file a complaint with the Georgia Public Service Commission.

  2. Speak to a reporter about your experience. There are several news organizations in Georgia who are interested in conducting an investigation about this rate plan and why the Georgia Public Service Commission is not protecting consumers. They want consumer experiences on this rate plan. To obtain their contact information email patty@coolplanetsolutions.com.

  3. Georgia Public Service Commissioners are elected by voters, and their salaries are paid by taxpayers. Every Georgia election includes at least one, and sometimes two PSC commissioners. Voters should punish commissioners for allowing this rate plan to take place by ejecting them from their seats. There are always competitors making promises to reduce your power bills. Listen to them: competitors aren’t blowing smoke by making those promises. You can be sure that no one is worse for keeping rates affordable than any commissioner already in that seat.

  4. The next commissioner up for election is Commissioner Tim Echols. He will be on your November 2022 ballot. Be sure to vote against him.
